Welcome to Quick Reactions, Regular Gamer’s “proto-review” segment where our editors write their thoughts on games they’re playing at the moment. Usually, this segment is reserved for games that aren’t deserving of a full review, which will be longer and have shiny grades on them (or something, we’re still ironing that out). On today’s QR, Brandon runs through his thoughts on Tron: Evolution (X360, PS3, PSP),
Last week, I played through Tron Evolution’s campaign on the Xbox 360. I haven’t played multiplayer at all yet, but I’ll probably expand this to a full review if I do.
PROS: There’s certainly some neat stuff in here. The multi-disc combat is kind of neat (especially in the later levels once you’ve upgraded them all), and some of the platforming is neat too. Also, the plot is pretty solid, if you’ve seen the movie there are gaps that the movie alludes to that this game fills, and while I don’t really know if the game is canonical or not, the way they explain how The Purge happened and how CLU came to power is definitely worth a playthrough.
CONS: Most of the neatness doesn’t translate from a gameplay perspective. While the multi-discs are neat, the combat is repetitive. While the platforming can be stunning and well-animated, some of the gameplay is really leap of faith, riddled with camera issues and God awful controls. The lightcycle segments are incredibly underwhelming, again due to control issues. The soundtrack isn’t nearly as good as the film’s, either.
When the game works, it’s a fun romp for Tron fans. When it doesn’t, it’s a f*cking trainwreck. I wouldn’t recommend Tron Evolution to anyone other than a fan, but if you liked Legacy and want to explore more of that world, Evolution’s worth a rental.
