The Windows 10 update for the Meltdown and Spectre CPU vulnerabilities is out, so I took the plunge and downloaded it. I also downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers for my GTX 1070 since I guess this whole ordeal isn’t limited to just CPUs.
I took some time today and ran three benchmarks post-update to see what sort of impact to performance I’d see on my aging i7-2600K gaming PC. I ran the following benchmarks a few times and took the average run for each.
Not too bad, eh? I was expecting larger performance drops based on the 5-30% claims, so 0.5-3% is a bit of a relief to see. Now these benchmarks aren’t very I/O intensive, which is where the largest performance hits will show up, but they give me a good idea as a PC gamer of what to expect.
